Some people seem to have charmed smiles; they have straight, perfectly white teeth with nary a cavity. The reality, though, is that proper care is always essential to keep teeth healthy and beautiful. This is true even for those who seem to have been born with perfect teeth.
When people look in the mirror and see a less-than-perfect smile, they may wonder what causes their teeth to look that way and begin to explore their options for addressing the issues. This is where orthodontics comes in: “Orthodontics is devoted to building beautiful smiles by bringing teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment. Straight teeth function better, are easier to clean, and are more likely to last your lifetime.”
Why is treatment necessary?
Orthodontics can address a wide variety of issues; in some cases, an individual may be facing two or more issues simultaneously. Problems related to the bite are common and they can appear in one of several ways. An overbite is present when the top teeth reach over past the bottom teeth. Crossbite is another bite-related issue and it occurs when the lower teeth extend past the upper teeth. Openbite refers to a condition that is present when the top front teeth and the bottom front teeth do not meet. Bite-related issues may cause problems of their own; for example, people who suffer from openbite are very prone to tongue thrusting.
Issues related to space in the mouth are also very common. Crowding refers to the condition that occurs when teeth are too close together; this often leads to the question of whether teeth will have to be removed. Although removal of a tooth or teeth is sometimes indicated to maximize orthodontic benefits, new technology provides options that may make this unnecessary. In contrast to crowding, some people suffer from a condition in which there is too much space, can be the result of missing teeth or gaps between the teeth.
In the past, traditional metal braces were the only option for addressing many orthodontic issues. Today, however, there are several options; the best one will depend on the individual situation. Traditional metal braces are still very popular; although there is some minor discomfort when they are put on and when the wires are tightened, they are much more comfortable than they were in the past. Invisalign is an innovative option that utilizes aligning trays to gradually shift the teeth. As the name implies, these braces are far less visible than traditional braces; in addition, the gradually-progressing trays can translate to minimum discomfort. Another option, the Damon System, involves the use of brackets that join together in a more gentle manner; as a result, this option is associated with greater comfort, as well.
Cost is a concern for many people when it comes to orthodontics. Orthodontic care may be partially covered by insurance; however, if there is a financial gap or if you lack insurance coverage, there are other options. CareCredit is a “personal line of credit for healthcare treatments and procedures for your entire family, including your pets. It is a credit card but it has two advantages. It can only be used for healthcare services and you can get no interest if paid in full within the promotional period on purchases made with your CareCredit card.”
